Hot days in Berlin 2 | 真夏のベルリンへ ②

To be honest with you, I hadn't expected that the food in Germany would be any good (sorry!), but I actually enjoyed it a lot.

ドイツの食に関しては、あまり期待していなかった（失礼！）のですが、なかなかどうして、美味しいじゃありませんか。

This is the Japanese restaurant ULA where we had our first lunch. Although my friend wasn't really happy about this choice as she came from Japan, I insisted we should have nice Japanese food. This restaurant offers brunch buffet on Sundays (and it was Sunday). We arrived there when they were about to close. We must have looked desperate (we were starving!), the chef kindly let us in.

到着した日にランチを頂いたレストラン。

和食です。日本から来た友人は渋ってましたが、わたしがどうしても行ってみたくて我がままを言いました。

この日は日曜日。こちらでは、毎週日曜日にブランチをやっていて、和食バイキングを楽しめます。

閉店時間ギリギリに到着したわたし達。いったんは断られたのですが、あまりにもひもじそうに見えたのか（実際、空腹で倒れそうだった！）、「残り物でよければ。。。」と入れていただきいました。

We enjoyed a big range of Japanese dishes, rice, miso soup and even sushi. Loved matcha cheese cake!

お惣菜あれこれに、ごはん、味噌汁、お寿司なんかもありましたよ。

味付けは若干濃いめ。煮物のしいたけが美味かったー。

デザートの抹茶チーズケーキ、絶品！

We found this German restaurant in Japanese guide book. They offered a rather limited menu but everything was delicious.

『地球の歩き方』に紹介されていたドイツ料理のお店。

メニューが少ないながらも、すっごく美味しかったです。

Their signature dish was schnitzel. You can choose the size of your schnitzel and I chose small which was quite big enough. The schnitzel was golden and crispy and the side salad had lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. Yum! I enjoyed a glass of Riesling as well.

シュニッツェルがお得意、だそうで。

ちなみにシュニッツェルはサイズを選ぶことができて、これはスモール、でございます。

いやー、これ、大当たり。

カリッと仕上がったシュニッツェルもさることながら、付け合わせのポテトと野菜とハーブがたっぷり入ったサラダの美味しいこと。

グラスで頼んだリースリングも美味でした。

In Germany, restaurants are not allowed to include service charge in the bill. So we got a lot of smiley faces on our bills.
ドイツでは、法律でサービス料を請求金額に含めることができないそうで。
お勘定書きは、毎回こんな「チップ、よろしく」な感じでした。

One day, we went to this market, Marheineke Markthalle, for lunch. There are plenty of international food stalls there alongside the fresh food stalls. We got an outside table and there were a lot of people who possibly worked nearby enjoying their lunch break.

ある日のランチは、こちらのマーケット Marheineke Markthalle にて。

生鮮食品のストールもありますが、国際色豊かなフードコートといった趣。

外のテラス席では、近所で働いていると思しき人々が大勢ランチしてましたよ。 

Although from a stall we were given a porcelain plate, knife and fork!
屋台なのにちゃんとしたお皿とカトラリーで食べられるのが嬉しい。

I chose Currywurst, Berliners' soul food. I'd thought it would be a sausage with curry sauce but it was with ketchup and curry powder.

ベルリン名物カリーヴルストを選んでみました。

これ、ソーセージにカレーソースがかかってるのかと思っていたのですが、カレー粉がかかってるんですねー。

昔、駄菓子屋にあった「カレーせんべい」を彷彿とさせるお味。美味い！

This was the lunch for another day. Pastrami sandwich from a NY styled deli. Look, it's huge! I just managed to finish one of these...

別のある日のランチは、ニューヨーク・スタイルのデリにてパストラミ・サンド。
見よ、このボリュームを！日本人女子だったら、間違いなく一切れで満腹に（わたしは一切れ食べきるのも苦しかった！）。

This stylishly decorated deli is located inside the first Jewish girls' school in Mitte. This building was used as a military hospital during the war and then as a grammar school. After that it was empty for decades and now it is a cultural facility with some art galleries. The building itself and its decoration are worth seeing.

スッキリとしたインテリアがツボなこのデリは、ミッテ地区の旧ユダヤ人女学校に入っています。
ユダヤ人女学校として建設されたこの建物は、その後、野戦病院やグラマー・スクールとして使われた後、しばらく空き家だったそう。今は文化施設になっていて、各階にギャラリーが入っています。
タイルや木材をふんだんに使用した内装が素敵なので、建物自体も一見の価値あり、です。

There is a posh restaurant as well. I like the use of the green colour.
同じく旧ユダヤ人女学校に入っていたポッシュなレストランへの入り口。グリーンが効いてますねぇ。

Hot days in Berlin 1 | 真夏のベルリンへ ①

In August, one of my best friends and her family in Japan came to London again and we spent five days in Berlin. London already felt like autumn but we had proper summer in Berlin with over 30 degrees Celsius every day. It was our first visit there, so we went to some obvious places. Our first destination was the Museum Island. We started with the Pergamon Museum. I bought a museum pass for 24 euros. With this pass, you can enter almost all museums and art galleries in Berlin for three days.

8月頭のこと。
昨年と同様、日本からやって来た友人一家と一緒に真夏のベルリンをウロウロしてきました。

すでに秋の気配を感じるロンドンと打って変わって、ベルリンは連日30度を超える猛暑。いや～、暑かった！

初ベルリンだった我々、まずは博物館島へゴー。
最初に向かったのはペルガモン博物館。
ここで、市内のほとんどの博物館・美術館に入場できる3日間有効のミュージアム・パスを購入しました。
24ユーロなり。3箇所行けば、元が取れます。

This was the only place we had to queue. The sign said that the waiting time was one hour but it was actually 30 to 40 minutes.
ここが唯一行列するほど混んでました。「1時間待ち」となっていますが、30～40分ほどで入れました。

In this museum, some antiquities from ancient Greece, Rome, and Middle East were reconstructed and it made me feel like visiting archaeological site one after another. It was a pity that we couldn't see the Pergamon Aler because of the refurbishment (it is closed until 2020). But there was plenty of  ancient art to enjoy.

館内には、古代ギリシャ、ローマ、中近東の建造物が再現されていて、あたかも遺跡巡りをしているかのよう。
残念だったのは、改修工事のため、博物館名の由来になっている「ペルガモンの大祭壇」が見られなかったこと（これは2020年まで見られないそう）。
とはいえ、古代美術好きには堪らない出土品が盛りだくさんで十分楽しめました。

Because they let only the limited number of people get in the museum, we didn't have to see the display in between people's heads. The lunch time came rather quickly and we had a break at a nearby cafe.

入場人数を制限しているお陰で、ゆったりと見て回れます。

あっという間にお昼になったので、近くのカフェで昼休憩。

ベルリンの地ビール。日本のビールのような喉越しスッキリ系。

In the afternoon we moved on to the New Museum where you can meet the most beautiful woman in Berlin, Nefertiti.

午後の部は新博物館へ。

「ベルリン一の美女」ネフェルティティの胸像がある博物館です。

神秘的な展示の仕方もよかった！ 

Before going back to the hotel, I popped in a cafe for a quick break. This iced latte I had in this cafe was the best coffee I had in Berlin. The cafe is situated between the Museum Island and the nearest underground station. They serve light meals such as salad. An useful address to know.

ホテルに戻る前にカフェで一休み。

ここで飲んだアイス・ラテ、滞在中に飲んだコーヒーの中で一番美味しかったです。

博物館島と最寄り駅の中間にあったこのカフェ、サラダ等の軽食も充実しておりました。使えますな、ここは。
