Make it Christmassy | クリスマス・デコレーション

10 days to go before Christmas. To make our cottage Christmassy, I made some decorations from plants in our garden and the woods.

クリスマスまで、あと10日。

気分を盛り上げるべく、庭と森で材料を集めてクリスマス・デコレーションを制作しました！

A wreath with wild clematis puff. After I made this, I realized that if I hang it outside the seeds would scatter around and the gardens in our neighbourhood would be covered by wild clematis...so, I hanged it on the kitchen door.

これ、外に飾ったら種が飛び散って、我が家の庭のみならずご近所中の庭がワイルド・クレマチスだらけになるんじゃあ？

と気付いて、キッチンのドアに飾ることに。

 

For the front door, I made this wreath with holly from the woods. Love the orangey colour of the berries.

で、玄関用に森で採ってきた柊でリースを作りました。

オレンジがかった実の色が気に入ってます。

We bought a pot grown tree so that we don't have to get a Christmas tree every year.
鉢植えのツリーを購入。これで毎年買いに行かなくても済むハズ。

Perhaps the highlight of the Christmas is the preparation :-)

なんだか準備してる時が一番楽しかったりしますね、クリスマスって（笑）

After four seasons | 四季が巡って

 

Now we've experienced all four seasons since we moved into this little cottage in the countryside. I've taken these photos of our garden from same position since January. You can see very subtle change of seasons. It would've been better if the garden had been full of flowers in spring and summer. I missed the chance to sow annuals this year, but I won't next year!

 

この片田舎のコテージに越してきてから四季が一巡りしました。

今年の１月から定点観測的に撮った庭の写真。微妙に季節が移ろってますねぇ。春と夏にもう少し花が咲き乱れてる感じにしたいな。今年は気づいた時には1年草の種蒔きの時期を逃してた、ワタクシ。来年は抜かりなく！

RHS Garden Wisley | ウィズリー・ガーデン

I visited RHS Garden Wisley last Sunday. I joined the RHS so many months ago and finally I had a chance! (The entrance fee is free for members.)

英国王立園芸協会（RHS）が運営する庭園の1つ、「ウィズリー・ガーデン」に行ってきました。
「ガーデニング始めたことだし♪」

と、はりきってRHS会員になったものの数ヶ月が経過。やっと総本山訪問です（会員は入場無料）。  

There are all sorts of gardens in a massive site; mixed borders, a rock garden, a rose garden, some woodland, a kitchen garden, an orchard, green houses, etc...even a parade of huge bonsai. Almost all the plants are labeled which is very useful. I got into a shopping mode at some point to look for plants for our garden rather than admiring the gardens :-D

広大な敷地内には、ボーダー、ロック・ガーデン、ローズ・ガーデン、ウッドランド、野菜畑に果樹園、温室などなど、ありとあらゆる庭が。巨大な盆栽が並ぶ一角もあったりして、見どころ満載。植物には（ほぼ）すべて名札が付いているので、とても参考になります。途中から庭園鑑賞というより、自宅の庭に植える植物を探す買い物モードに（笑）

Realised the charm of ornamental grasses for the first time. Very autumnal with fluffy heads chatching the sun and swinging in breeze.
オーナメンタルグラスの魅力に開眼！日差しを受けて輝く穂が風に揺れて。秋ですねぇ。

Erigeron Karvinskianus. The flower colour changes from white to pink. Very pretty when planted by the wall.
Maybe I can introduce this one soon.
ペラペラヨメナ（この名前は如何なものか。。笑）。花の色が白からピンクに変わります。
壁際に植えると可愛い。これは早速取り入れられるかも。

Love these sphire shaped flowers! From top to bottom: Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue', Succisella Inflexa 'Frosted Pearls'.
球状の花がかわいい！上からエキノプス 'ヴィーチズ・ブルー'、サクシセラ・フロステッドバールズ。

I also loved these flowers but they didn't have the labels. Is the right one a kind of scabiosas?
Edit 1: Thanks to my friend, I now know the left one is Salvia 'Phyllis' Fancy'.

追記：友人の協力により左側の花が「サルビア 'Phyllis' Fancy'」であることが判明。

What amazed me about Wisley was that the borders were full of plants and they were all in bloom (our border has quite a few gaps between the flowers but then our garden isn't Wisley). How do they create the layout of flowers for different seasons? I should go back in different seasons!

ウィズリー・ガーデン、なにがすごいって、ボーダーにみっちり植わった花々が咲き乱れてたこと（比べるのもおこがましいですが、我が家のボーダー、常に花がまばらな感じ）。

いつ行っても咲き乱れてるんだろうけど、季節ごとの花をどうやって配置してるんだろう？

また別の時季に要再訪ですな。

End of summer | 夏の終わり

Honeysuckle berries are getting their colour. I remember that there were a lot of red berries when we moved in last autumn.
実が赤く色づき始めたハニーサックル。昨年、引っ越してきたとき赤い実がたくさんなっていたのを思い出します。

The temperature has dropped since the end of August and although it's been milder since the beginning of this month, the day time has been getting shorter and shorter. Autumn is almost there in England. We've experienced (almost) all four seasons since we moved to this cottage. Our garden was full of flowers in spring but by the end of June it got greener with less flowers. Now in September, I've started to sow seeds and plant bulbs which flower in spring and summer. I'm thinking about getting more summer flowering perennials, so I often stand in the middle of the garden and get the ideas what and where I should plant, dreaming about my imaginary garden. I guess autumn is the beginning of the gardening cycle.

8月末からぐっと冷え込んできた英国。今月に入って気温は持ち直したものの、だんだん日が短くなってきて秋の気配が濃厚になって来ました。
この家に越してきて季節が（ほぼ）一巡りしました。春には花が咲き乱れていた我が家の庭ですが、6月末ごろから葉っぱの緑だけが目立つ状態に。

9月に入ってから、来年の春夏に向けて種を蒔いたり、球根を植えたりしています。夏に花を咲かせる宿根草も植えたいと思っていて、何をどこに植えるか、庭に出ては妄想を膨らませております。庭仕事のサイクルでは秋が1年のスタートなんですねー。

We got rid of the bulky shrub with plenty of leaves and no flower from the corner of the garden. I planted a lovely hydrangea there. I love its colours, from lime green to pink!
 
葉っぱだけがワッサリ茂って場所を取るわりには花が咲くでもなし、という灌木を取り除いて、前から欲しかったアジサイを植えました。ライムグリーンからピンクに変わる微妙な色合いが堪りません！

This rose is going to have the forth flush of flowers.
薔薇の木に4番花の蕾が。繰り返し長く咲くんですねー。

Sedum autumn joy. Pretty pink colour a bit like a blushed cheek.
乙女の頬のようにほんのりピンクに染まったセダム オータムジョイ。

Found many flower buds of ceanothus. Looking forward to seeing all of them flowering in spring!
セアノサスに既に蕾が付いています。しかも、たくさん。これが全部咲くのかと思うと春が楽しみ！

Time is running out for the edamame in our vegetable patch. But look, aren't they flower buds? Maybe I should keep my hope a little longer.
寒くなって来て時間切れの感がある枝豆。でも、これはもしや蕾？もう少し希望を捨てずにお世話しよう。。

Our first harvest | 初めての収穫

Since middle of June, we've been harvesting in our garden. Raspberries are becoming raspberry coloured and ready to pick. I pick them everyday.

6月半ば頃から、ぼちぼち庭での収穫作業が始まりました。
まずラズベリーの実が色づき始めまして、毎日せっせと摘んでおります。

I stored raspberries in the freezer and made two jars of jam. Well, I cooked it too long and it is a bit too solid.
  
冷凍庫に貯めておいて、ある程度の量になったらジャムに。ジャムジャー2つ分できました。
少々煮詰め過ぎて硬い仕上がりに。。。（後ろの瓶、ジャムが浮いてるのがおわかりでしょうか。トホホ）

Broad beans did really well! We enjoyed young ones and  matured ones. Slugs enjoyed one third of them though. Oh thou slugs, despite the plenty of weeds to eat in the garden, why do you come to the vegetable patch?

ソラマメ、豊作でした！
薄皮を剥かずに食べられる若いのから、しっかり完熟させたのまで堪能いたしました。
1/3くらい、ナメクジに食べられましたが。 ナメクジよ、庭には雑草がたっぷり生えているというのに何故わざわざ畑の作物を食べるのか！

Red currants, like small gems. We didn't get much, just a handful. I made res currant sauce and it went well with vanilla ice cream. 

まるで小さな宝石のようなフサスグリの実。

残念ながら、 ひとつかみほどしか収穫できず。。砂糖と一緒に煮てバニラアイスにかけて食べました。

Voodoo lily | ヴードゥーリリー開花

So this is the flower of the voodoo lily. How bizarre looking! And it smells like rotten meat! A lot of flies were hovering around the flower, attracted by this shocking smell which faded away the following day (pheeew!)

なんとも面妖なお姿。
そして本当に腐った肉のにおいがします！
そして、においに引き寄せられた蝿が花の周りを飛び交ってます。。
幸いなことに、この強烈なにおい、翌日には消えておりました（ホッ）。

Early summer gardening | 初夏の庭仕事

Since middle of May, I've been busy gardening. The main task has been to prune early flowering shrubs, as well as deadheading and weeding. As a reminder for the future, the shrubs I've pruned so far are: wisteria (still on going),  viburnum, weigela, mock orange, and ceanothus.

* Edit 1: The shrub I thought viburnum is actually cornus which should be pruned between Feb and March...

For gardening, I find it difficult to follow the agenda of the day's work. I would plan to prune weigela but notice weeds in the border on my way to the shrub. Then I would start pulling them and couldn't stop - and run out of the time..This happens all the time!

５月半ば辺りから、俄然庭仕事が忙しくなってきました。

主な作業は春に花を咲かせた灌木の剪定で、合間に花がら摘みと草抜き、といった感じ。

今後の備忘録として、花後に剪定した灌木を挙げておくと。。

※追記： ガマズミと思っていた灌木は「ミズキ」でした。。剪定時期は2月から3月。

それにしても庭仕事って計画的に行かないものですねぇ。

剪定するぞー、と思ってタニウツギに向かう途中、ボーダーの雑草に気付いてちょっと抜き始めたたら止まらなくなって時間切れ。。なんてことがよくあります。。

We've planted some tomatos, peppers, and chillies in the shed.

物置小屋兼温室で野菜を育て始めました。

トマトとパプリカと唐辛子。

We've sowed several kinds of seeds on our vegetable patch where we only have broad beans. The covered area is for eda-mame. It came out but all eaten by slugs ;-( I've sowed them again in the shed. The damned slugs have eaten a bit of burdock root shoots as well. Guess I have to use beer trap..

ソラマメしか植わってなかった野菜畑にあれこれ種を蒔いてみました。

奥の覆いがしてあるのは枝豆。無事芽が出たのですが、ナメクジに食べられて全滅（泣）

只今、苗にしてから植えるべく 温室で育苗中。

やっと出た牛蒡の芽もかじられてたので、ビールを入れた器を置くことに。

I've pulled quite a lot of crocosmia which dominated the border. Look at the amount I had to pull! Apparently, one of the prefectures in Japan bans this plant as it's too vigorous.

すごい繁殖力で ボーダーを占拠する勢いだったクロコスミア。

抜きに抜いてこの量！

繁殖力の強さから、佐賀県では県の条例でクロコスミアの栽培や持ち込みが禁止されているとか。。

Roses are starting to bloom. Shame the petals are damaged a bit by rain. the left one smells really nice even before coming out.
バラが咲き始めました。雨に打たれて花びらがチリチリ。左のバラは蕾の時点ですごーく良い香り。

The previous owner of our cottage visited us the other day and he gave us a bit of a garden tour. We learned that the most unusual plant in our garden might be "voodoo lily". This plant was already there when he moved in. I wonder how this Indian origin plant traveled here..

先日、前住人の方が来て、庭の植物についてあれこれ教えていただきました。

我が家の植物の中で一番珍しいのは「ヴードゥーリリー」ではないか、とのこと。

前住人の方が越してきたときには既に植わってたそうで、インド原産の植物がどういう経緯でこんなとこに来たんでしょうねー。

The garden in May | 五月の庭

While I was in Japan for 2 weeks, our garden changed a lot. More and more flowers are coming out now!

2週間日本に行ってる間に、我が家の庭は大きく変化しておりました。

ますますたくさんの花が咲き始めましたよ。

The wisteria and roses are in full bloom in front of our cottage.
家の正面の藤と蔓バラが満開に。

I planted Agapanthus allium bulbs last autumn. At the moment the flower looks a bit like a leek flower.
秋に球根を植えたアガパンサスアリウムが開花間近。ちょっとネギ坊主っぽい。

I turned the soil of our vegetable patch today to sow burdock root and eda-mame. They will be ready to sow after a short while. I'll enjoy beer with eda-mame and fried burdock root this summer!

今日は、日本で買ってきた牛蒡と枝豆の種を蒔くべく野菜畑を耕しました。
もう少ししたら蒔くつもり。
今年の夏は、枝豆ときんぴらをアテにビール飲むぞー！

Garden in bloom | 花咲く庭

Since "British summer time" spring has finally started. Our magnolia stellata is in full bloom!

We took over our garden from the previous owners. So, it's a mystery what kind of plants we actually have until they come out. And there have been quite a lot coming out recently.

夏時間が始まって、いよいよ春真っ盛りな英国。
庭のシデコブシの花が満開を迎えました。

我が家の庭は前住人から引き継いだもの。
どんな植物が植わっているかは時期がくるまで分かりません。
で。春が来て動きがありましたよー、色々と。

I'm not sure what kind of plants they are in the top right and bottom right pics.
右上と右下の植物が何なのか謎。

The top one is acer. I've never seen acer's flowers..
上の段の写真は楓。楓の花、初めて見ました。。

Gooseberry Currant flowers. Is the crop guaranteed?
西洋スグリフサスグリの花。花が咲いたってことは、収穫が期待できる？！

 Broad beans have grown very well. Already flowering. I tied them to the bamboo sticks after I saw some of them fell on the ground.
ソラマメもこんなに大きくなりました。早くも花が。
何本か地面にバッタリ倒れてたので、慌てて支柱にくくりつけてみました。 

The only concern is that I can't distinguish weeds from the plants which are supposed to be there. At the moment, I just get rid of dandelions which I can recognize as I'm afraid of pulling out some precious plants... Hopefully, I'll gradually learn more from the encyclopedia of garden plants I've just bought.

目下の課題は、雑草と雑草じゃない植物の区別がつかないこと。

とりあえず、貴重な植物を引っこ抜かないように確実に見分けがつくタンポポだけ抜くことにしてます。。

庭の植物事典を購入したので、追々学習しよーっと。

Wating for the sun.. | 太陽を待ちわびて。。

The sun came out last Sunday after how long I can't remember! I popped out for a short walk into the woods.

日曜日、いつぶりだか思い出せないくらい久しぶりに太陽が顔を出しました！ ちょっくら森へお散歩に出かけましたよ。

A lake appeared in the field after so much rain over last two months.
2カ月以上続いた雨で、フィールドの真中に湖が出現。

Slowly but steady. Spring is on its way.
少しずつ春の気配。ゆっくりと着実に。

The flowers have started to bloom in our garden.

We've had so much rain this winter (too much!). I just hope that the areas affected by flooding go back to normal as soon as possible..

今年の冬は本当に雨、雨、雨、そして雨。洪水の被害にあった地域が少しでも早く日常を取り戻しますように。。
