Brighton | ブライトン

先日のこと。
春を通り越して夏のような眩しい太陽に誘われて、海辺の街ブライトンへと行って参りました。

車で向かう道すがら、とおりかかった菜の花畑。
満開でした～。キッラキラ！

実はワタクシ、昔、ブライトン（正確には隣町のホーヴ）で語学学校に通っていたのでした。今回は20ウン年ぶり（！）の再訪となりました。

ロイヤル・パビリオン。記憶より、ずっと小ぢんまりしてる。

街中に入ると、独立系のカフェやショップがしのぎを削っていて街歩きが楽しいったら！
ロンドンよりもグッと賃料が安くて店を維持しやすい、というのもあるんだろうけど、性的マイノリティの方たちが多く住んでいたり、英国で唯一「緑の党」の国会議員を選出していたりという土地柄、もあるのかも。

というわけで、目についた良さげなカフェでコーヒー休憩。

大きなカップになみなみと注がれたフラット・ホワイト。このコーヒーが、酸味を抑えた香ばしい味でストライクゾーンど真ん中だったのですよ。
そうこうしていると、キッチンから出来立てのサンドイッチがどんどん運ばれてきて、カウンターに並べられていきます。うーん、美味しそう。。。

で、そのままランチになだれ込みました。
「エッグ・ベネディクト」と「ベリーとホワイト・チョコのパンケーキ」。
エッグ・ベネディクトは、オランデーズ・ソースがもうちょっと少なくてもいいかな、という感じでしたが、卵トローッ、マフィンかりっ、で美味しゅうございました。
パンケーキは四段重ね！程よい甘さで、こちらも美味しくいただきました。

お腹が満たされたところで、街歩き再開です。

写真右上のお店 UTILITY、めっちゃツボな雑貨屋さんでした。痒い所に手が届く、長く使えそうな雑貨が山盛り。欲しいものがありすぎて絞り込めず、結局何も買えなかったのが悔やまれます。。。

昔のピアの名残。

ブライトン、前回滞在時の記憶はほとんど蘇ってこなかったのですが、居心地良いことこの上なし、でありました。また近々再訪したい！

Dungeness | ダンジェネス

About two weeks ago, My husband and I went to Dungeness, a seaside town in Kent.

2週間ほど前のこと。
ケント州の海辺の町、ダンジェネスへ行ってきました。

There are black cottages dotted around by the beach and amongst them is the Prospect Cottage where an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener and author Derek Jarman lived and created his garden.

海岸沿いには黒いコテージがポツポツと並んでいて、その中に、映画監督、舞台デザイナー、作家、園芸家だったデレク・ジャーマンが暮らしたコテージと彼が作り上げた庭があります（この庭については、もうひとつのブログをご参照あれ）。

The beach is really bleak.

そして海岸には、荒涼とした風景が広がっています。

It feels like the time has stopped there with abandoned fishing boats, ruined fisherman's cabins... Fascinating as I love ruins!

打ち捨てられた漁船。朽ち果てた漁師小屋。 

まるで時が止まっているかのような。。。廃墟好きには堪りません！

We drove there with other Citroën enthusiasts to celebrale the 60th anniversary of  Citroën DS.

この日はシトロエン DS のデビュー60周年を祝おう、ということで、愛好家の皆さんと一緒に走ったのでした。

RHS Garden Wisley | ウィズリー・ガーデン

I visited RHS Garden Wisley last Sunday. I joined the RHS so many months ago and finally I had a chance! (The entrance fee is free for members.)

英国王立園芸協会（RHS）が運営する庭園の1つ、「ウィズリー・ガーデン」に行ってきました。
「ガーデニング始めたことだし♪」

と、はりきってRHS会員になったものの数ヶ月が経過。やっと総本山訪問です（会員は入場無料）。  

There are all sorts of gardens in a massive site; mixed borders, a rock garden, a rose garden, some woodland, a kitchen garden, an orchard, green houses, etc...even a parade of huge bonsai. Almost all the plants are labeled which is very useful. I got into a shopping mode at some point to look for plants for our garden rather than admiring the gardens :-D

広大な敷地内には、ボーダー、ロック・ガーデン、ローズ・ガーデン、ウッドランド、野菜畑に果樹園、温室などなど、ありとあらゆる庭が。巨大な盆栽が並ぶ一角もあったりして、見どころ満載。植物には（ほぼ）すべて名札が付いているので、とても参考になります。途中から庭園鑑賞というより、自宅の庭に植える植物を探す買い物モードに（笑）

Realised the charm of ornamental grasses for the first time. Very autumnal with fluffy heads chatching the sun and swinging in breeze.
オーナメンタルグラスの魅力に開眼！日差しを受けて輝く穂が風に揺れて。秋ですねぇ。

Erigeron Karvinskianus. The flower colour changes from white to pink. Very pretty when planted by the wall.
Maybe I can introduce this one soon.
ペラペラヨメナ（この名前は如何なものか。。笑）。花の色が白からピンクに変わります。
壁際に植えると可愛い。これは早速取り入れられるかも。

Love these sphire shaped flowers! From top to bottom: Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue', Succisella Inflexa 'Frosted Pearls'.
球状の花がかわいい！上からエキノプス 'ヴィーチズ・ブルー'、サクシセラ・フロステッドバールズ。

I also loved these flowers but they didn't have the labels. Is the right one a kind of scabiosas?
Edit 1: Thanks to my friend, I now know the left one is Salvia 'Phyllis' Fancy'.
心惹かれたものの名札が付いていなかったお花たち。。右側はスカビオサか？
追記：友人の協力により左側の花が「サルビア 'Phyllis' Fancy'」であることが判明。

What amazed me about Wisley was that the borders were full of plants and they were all in bloom (our border has quite a few gaps between the flowers but then our garden isn't Wisley). How do they create the layout of flowers for different seasons? I should go back in different seasons!

ウィズリー・ガーデン、なにがすごいって、ボーダーにみっちり植わった花々が咲き乱れてたこと（比べるのもおこがましいですが、我が家のボーダー、常に花がまばらな感じ）。

いつ行っても咲き乱れてるんだろうけど、季節ごとの花をどうやって配置してるんだろう？

また別の時季に要再訪ですな。

A visit from an old friend | 有朋自遠方来

One of my best friends from secondary school in Japan came over to England for a week with her two daughters. They stayed in London and went to a language school together during weekday and visited our place on Saturday. We arranged to meet up at our nearest train station, but she fell asleep on the train and missed the station! My husband and I were driving alongside the railway while I was contacting her via LINE. We managed to see each other two stations ahead thanks for LINE (what a useful technological world we live in!).

We wanted them spend "typical" English weekend. So we drove off to a vintage fair called Firle Vintage Summer Fair Sussex. In the garden of the beautiful country house, there were a lot of antique and vintage stalls. There were quite a few French antiques which I love. Live Jazz music, food stalls, a pond with water lilies...I could've spend there all day.

中学時代からの親友が娘2人を引き連れて1週間の予定で英国へやってきました。

ロンドンに滞在して平日は揃って語学学校へ通っていた彼女ら、土曜日に我が家まで来てくれました。

最寄駅で待ち合わせ、のハズが電車で寝込んで降り損ねる、というハプニングが！

線路脇を車で走りつつ、LINEでやり取り、2つ先の駅で無事会うことができました。

LINEサマサマ、便利な世の中になったものです。

「典型的な」英国の休日を味わってもらうべく、車で1時間ほど走ってヴィンテージ・フェアへ。

この Firle Vintage Summer Fair Sussex 、 カントリー・ハウスの庭にアンティーク、ヴィンテージのストールがズラリ。フレンチ・アンティークが結構ありましたねー。流行ってるんでしょうか？

ジャズの生演奏があったり。
フード・ストールも充実してました。

睡蓮の咲く池なんかもあったりして、時間が許せば1日のんびりできそう。

After treasure hunting, we had early dinner in our garden. The menu was typical English summer food, a barbie! I cooked some Mediterranean themed dishes.

マーケットの戦利品を抱えて我が家に戻ったら、英国の夏はこれでしょう！のBBQで早めの晩ごはん。

今回の料理のテーマは中東・北アフリカあたり。

We opened a bottle of ｃhampagne which we bought in France last month...Mmm, heavenly! They went off to Paris on the following day. Hope they have a lot of fun there!

  

先月のフランス旅行で購入したシャンパンもあけて。

これに勝る極楽なし、ですな。

友人ご一行は翌日、フランスはパリに向けて旅立ってゆきました。
