Iceland, A Circumnavigation 5 | アイスランド 国道1号線のたび⑤

It's been a while since I last posted about our Icelandic holiday. This is the final post.

On the day 6, I went to the pharmacy first thing in the morning to get some pain killers and ointment for my husband's twisted ankle (which was actually fractured). We set off to the direction of Reykjavik.

途切れがちだったアイスランド旅行記、やっとこさ最終回です。

6日目。朝一番で薬局に行ってツレアイの痛み止めと捻挫用の塗り薬を購入後（捻挫じゃなくて骨折だったんだけど）、レイキャヴィク方面へ向けて出発しました。

この写真、歩けないツレアイを支え、風雪に耐えながら撮った渾身の一枚です（笑）

フロインフォッサル。約1Kmにわたって滝が流れ落ちてます。

Our original plan for this day was going to Reykjavik but we decided to slow down and stayed in a town called Borgarnes. When we arrived at our hotel  Borgarnes Bed & Breakfast, the landlady on her crutch welcomed us. She showed great sympathy for my husband and gave him a walking stick (he was using a suitcase as his stick...).

この日はレイキャビクまで行く予定でしたが、無理をせず、途中のボルガネースで泊まることに。
この日のお宿は Borgarnes Bed & Breakfast。
到着すると、松葉杖をついた女主人が出迎えてくれました。怪我人同士、ツレアイと意気投合した女主人、スーツケースを杖代わりにしていた彼に、杖を譲ってくれました。

On the day 7, we drove along the sea side road to Reykjavik.
 
明けて7日目。海沿いの道を選びながら、レイキャヴィクを目指します。

Traditional buildings in the middle of nowhere. Inside was a small cafe where we had lunch. It was so cold that day that I couldn't take off my coat even inside the building. An Icelandic tour guide saw me and gave me a piece of advice; eat a lot of meat to warm you up.

ここでお昼にしたのですが、この日はめちゃくちゃ寒くて屋内でもコートを脱げなかったワタクシ。

カフェに居合わせたアイスランド人ガイドの方に

「体が温まるから、肉をたくさん食べなさい」

とアドバイスされました。

We arrived at  Reykjavik in the early evening. Seven days ago, it felt so tiny as a capital but after having traveled such isolated places it looked shiny. Next day, we made a quick visit to The Blue Lagoon and then flew back to London in the afternoon. Iceland was an ideal destination to enjoy extraordinary experiences. We would drive for hours in whiteout or be very isolated from civilization. People were so kind there and the water was surprisingly tasty. The Icelandic scenery was breathtakingly beautiful and overwhelmingly raw at the same time. I hope that we can visit there again in a different season.

夕方、レイキャヴィクに到着。
7日前は「首都なのに小ぢんまりしてるな」と思ったけれど、人里離れたところを廻ってきた後ではキラキラ眩しい（笑）
翌日、ブルーラグーンに寄ってから昼過ぎの飛行機でロンドンへ戻りました。

アイスランド、非日常を経験するにはうってつけの場所でした。
視界ゼロの中、何時間もドライブしたり、道中ほとんど人に会うことがなくて、文明と隔離された感を味わったり。
あ、 あと、ビックリするくらい人が親切で、水が美味しかったです。
アイスランドの自然は、息をのむほど美しいと同時に生々しくてちょっと怖いような。また違う季節に訪れてみたいですねー。

I brought some packets of skyr. According to Wiki it is a kind of cheese. Very similar to Greek yogurt. Yum!
お土産に買って帰ったスキール。Wikiによるとチーズの一種だそうですが、グリーク・ヨーグルトみたいな感じ。うまい！

Iceland, A Circumnavigation 4 | アイスランド 国道1号線のたび④

It's been a long time since I last posted about our adventure in Iceland.

Anyway, on the fifth day, we were heading to the north to the second biggest city in Iceland, Akureyri. It was the longest drive for this trip. Before we set off, the landlady said
"The ring road is closed between Egilsstaðir to Akureyri because of the bad weather"
We decided to go on to Egilsstaðir and see if the road conditions had improved by the time we arrived there, thinking about the worst case scenario - returning to Reykjavik.

随分間が空きましたが、アイスランド旅行記の続きです。

さて。
5日目は、国道1号線を北上してアイスランド第2の都市アークレイリまで向かいます。
今回の旅で一番長い行程。出発前に宿の女主人が
「悪天候でエイイルススタジルからアークレイリまで1号線が通行止めになってるわよ」
と。
最悪レイキャビクまで引き返すことも念頭におきつつ、 とりあえずエイイルススタジルまで行ってみることに。

After awhile, we arrived at the eastern fjords.

しばらく走ると、東部フィヨルド地帯に出ました。

We stopped the car and took a lot of photos here and there. The weather was fantastic.

お天気も良くて、車を停めては写真を撮りまくるツレアイとわたし。

Something happened after I took this photo (above). When I returned to the car, I couldn't see my husband. I looked around and found him crouching on the ground. He slipped on the ice and twisted his right ankle (after came back to the UK, it turned out that his ankle was fractured!).

He needed some pain killers but there was nothing but the snow fields. We decided to go to Egilsstaðir as soon as possible. He asked me to drive but I couldn't drive a 4WD on an icy road without any driving experience...poor him!

We found a cafe called SALT (whose bread was awesome) in Egilsstaðir and asked where the pharmacy was. The waitress said
"It's not open today, because it's Sunday"
... I popped in the shop by the petrol station and asked the young man if they had pain killers, thinking maybe they didn't. He said
"You can borrow mine"
He even checked the road condition online for us and told me that the ring road to Akureyri was now open. Very kind of him! I saw a halo behind him... 

 

そして、この（上の）写真を撮った直後にそれは起こりました。

車に戻るとツレアイの姿が見当たりません。

見ると、車のわきにうずくまっているではありませんか。

氷ですべって右足首を捻挫した、と苦悶の表情を浮かべています（帰国後、実は骨折していたと判明）。

何か手当を、と思えど周囲は見渡す限りの雪原。
取り急ぎ、エイイルススタジルに行って痛み止めを入手することに。
途中で運転を代わって欲しいと言われましたが、碌に運転したこともないのに雪道で4WDを運転するなんてとんでもない、と可哀相ですが頑張ってもらいました。。

エイイルススタジルでSALTというカフェに入り（パンがベラボーに美味しかった）、薬屋の場所を聞くと
「今日は日曜日だから開いてないよ」
 。。。唯一開いていたガソリンスタンドのショップでダメ元で痛み止めがないか聞いてみると、お店のお兄さんが
「僕の薬を"貸して"あげるよ」
と。さらにネットで道路情報をチェックして、通行止めが解除されていることも教えてくれました。ありがとう！お兄さんの姿には後光が射しておりました。。

We drove off to the north again and arrived at a geothermal area. Massive amounts of steam were coming out.

再び北に向かって車を走らせると、地熱地帯にでました。
もうもうと水蒸気が上がっています。

The powerful energy of the earth...sulfur smell almost choked us!
地球のエネルギーに圧倒され。。もんのすごい硫黄臭で早々に退散。

ここまで来れば、本日の目的地アークレイリはすぐそこです。

Iceland, A Circumnavigation 3 | アイスランド 国道1号線のたび③

In the morning of forth day, everything was covered by snow. We visited Jökulsárlón again in the snow. It looked surprisingly different from the previous day! 

4日目の朝、起きてみると外は一面の雪景色。
降りしきる雪の中、昨日訪れた氷河湖ヨークルスアゥルロゥンを再訪。

なんと、昨日とすっかり景色が変わっているではありませんか！

We saw several groups of gabbling geese flying over our heads.
雁の群れが賑やかに鳴きながらいくつも頭上を通り過ぎます。

アザラシの群れ！マッタリ寛いでます。嗚呼～、アザラシいるって知ってたら双眼鏡持っていったのにぃ～。

We moved on to an abandoned house which we found in the previous evening.

この後、昨日の夕方見かけた廃屋に行ってみました。
 

It looks like a farm house.  Did people leave here because life was too hard?
We saw quite a few of abandoned houses during this holiday.
元は農場だったのでしょう。生活の厳しさに耐えかねて土地を離れたのでしょうか。。
廃屋、旅の間ちょくちょく目にしました。

Then we went to the beach.

お次は海岸へ。

Across the shore is a NATO radar base. Iceland is a member of NATO even though they don't have a military. My husband went closer to the base and found a notice at the gate saying something like "if you enter the property without permission, you will be shot"(!)

And we went off road..

向こう岸に見えるのはNATOのレーダー基地。

アイスランドは軍隊はないけど、NATOに加盟しているそうで。

基地の側まで行ったツレアイによると、

「敷地に無断で入った人は撃ちます」

みたいな通知が門に貼ってあったそう（怖）

さらに道なき道を進んで。。

We headed back to the same B&B. The snow had mostly gone and there was a beautiful sunset in the sky.

本日の宿は昨日と同じB&B。

戻ってみるとすっかり雪が溶けてキレイな夕焼けが。

Iceland, A Circumnavigation 2 | アイスランド 国道1号線のたび②

Early in the morning of third day, we set off on the ring road from Reykjavik travelling in an anti clockwise direction heading south and then east. The scenery we saw previous day was so fascinating that I couldn't wait to see more!

After a while, all of a sudden, a lot of tourists appeared by the Ring Road. There were several big coaches as well. We decided to stop and check it out..

3日目の朝、アイスランド南部に向けて出発。
前日見た景色にすっかり魅了されたわたしたち、今日は一体どんな風景が待っているのかワクワクです。

国道1号線をしばらく走ると、突如人だかりが。大型バスも何台か止まっています。
なんだなんだと寄ってみると。。

It was Eyjafjallajökull which had the eruption in 2010. The eruption happened behind the buildings in the photo and the area was covered by ash.

 2010年に火山が噴火したエイヤフィヤトラヨークトル氷河でした。

写真の建物奥が噴火して、辺り一帯灰に覆われたそう。

Then we drove down to the south, headed for a sea side town Vik.

さらに国道1号線を南下、海辺の街ヴィークを目指します。

砂浜が黒い！なぜ？？ビーチには貝殻とか何もなくて、黒い砂が延々と。

After lunch in Vik, we drove further east towards our final destination that day, a town called Höfn.

ヴィークでランチの後、さらに東にあるヘプンという街を目指します。

In late afternoon, we arrived at the largest glacier in Europe, the Vatna Glacier.  

夕方近くに、ヨーロッパ最大の氷河、ヴァトナ氷河に到着。

Then we moved on to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

さらに移動して、氷河湖ヨークルスアゥルロゥンへ。

Over the bridge is the Atlantic Ocean.
橋の向こうは大西洋。

打ち上げられた氷塊。これは、どれくらい前に降った雪なんだろう。。
この氷で焼酎ロック作ったら、さぞうまかろー（笑）

After enjoying the amazing glacier, we headed to the accommodation for that night, a B&B in a farm which we booked in advance. But our satnav didn't show the destination with the address I input! We couldn't find the B&B and we arrived at Höfn. We parked the car in a car park of  a small grocery shop and my husband phoned the B&B to ask the direction. When he told the landlady where we were, she said

"My daughter is working in that shop. You can ask her"

So he went to the shop and her daughter gave him a direction and a map. She must have been surprised that without warning an Englishman came in and called her name!

さて。氷河を満喫したわたしたち、本日の宿へ向かいます。

本日の宿は事前に予約しておいたヘプン近郊の農場が営むB&B。

カーナビに住所を入れて、いざ出発！と思ったら目的地が表示されません。

ウロウロしているうちにヘプンに到着。

小さなスーパーの駐車場に車を停めて、宿に電話して道順を聞いてみることに。

「ヘプンのスーパーの駐車場にいるのですが。。」

と言うと、

「そこのスーパーでうちの娘が働いてるから、彼女に聞いて」

と女主人。

ツレアイが聞きに行って、無事地図と道順をゲットしてきました。

娘さん、突然見知らぬ外国人が自分の名前を呼びながら入って来てビックリしただろうなぁ（笑）

Iceland, A Circumnavigation 1 | アイスランド 国道1号線のたび①

My husband and I spent a week in Iceland earlier this month. We drove round the whole Ring Road, which was a bit of an adventure!

We arrived at Keflavik international airport after 22.00. We straight jumped in our rental car and drove off to our hotel in Reykjavik. As we were heading to Reykjavik, we saw some faint green lights floating and dancing in the night sky. Are they the northern lights?! We saw them again when we unloaded our luggage at the hotel car park! The northern lights at our first night, how lucky we are! (In the end, that was the only time we saw the northern lights...still we were lucky to see them!)

Next morning, we set off to explore one of the highlights of Iceland, the Golden Circle.


ツレアイと2人、冬の終わりのアイスランドに1週間ほど行ってきました。
レンタカーで国道1号線（リング・ロード）をひた走り、 島をグルリと1周してきましたよ！

午後10時過ぎ到着の便でケプラヴィーク国際空港に降り立ったわたしたち。
手配していたレンタカーでレイキャヴィク市内のホテルに向かいます。
その道すがら、夜空に緑色の淡い光がふわふわー、ゆらゆらー、と。
オ、オーロラ？！
その後ホテルの駐車場で荷物を降ろしてるときに、再び目撃しました！
何て幸先いいんでしょう！
（結局これが最初で最後のオーロラ体験でしたが。。でも見られてラッキー！）

さて。翌日はアイスランド最大の見どころ、ゴールデン・サークルへ。

Our first destination was Thingvellir National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. There is a great gap in the earth there - a gorge where two continental shelves meet. It is also famous for the world's first democratic national assembly, held there in AD 930.

 

まず向かったのはユネスコの世界遺産にも登録されているシンクヴェトリル国立公園。

地球の割れ目を見ることができます。

また、930年にはここで世界で初めて民主的な議会が開催されたとか。

ギャウと呼ばれる地球の割れ目。ユーラシア・プレートと北米プレートの境目です。

From the view point. We just managed to stay there for 5 minutes
and take a few pics in very very strong wind!
展望台からの眺め。猛烈な強風にさらされて、早々に退散。

Then we move on to Geysir.

お次は間欠泉、ゲイシール見物へ。

The Great Geysir. This one is only active once a day or so.
一番大きな間欠泉。噴き上がるのは1日1回くらいだそう。

Strokkur. So powerful.
Don't stand downwind, otherwise you are covered by hot water (I was!)
ストロックル間欠泉。すごい迫力。風下にいると、お湯がザーッと降ってきます。。

And our final destination for this day was Gullfoss. It was just "wow"!


最後に向かったのはグトルフォスです。
その姿を目にした瞬間、思わず「おぉ。。」と感嘆の声が。

Gullfoss means 'golden waterfall'.
グトルフォスは「黄金の滝」という意味だそう。

Then We went back to Reykjavik for dinner. The resturant we chose was SNAPS, a bistro not too far from Hallgrim's Church. Although it was Thursday evening, the place was fully booked. We managed to get some space at the counter. 

見どころを満喫したわたしたち、レイキャヴィクに戻って晩ごはんに出かけました。

向かったのは、ハットルグリムス教会にほど近いビストロ「SNAPS」

平日の夜だというのに予約で一杯。なんとかカウンター席をゲットしました。

We loved this fruity local beer.
レイキャヴィクの地ビール。フルーティで美味。

My husband had "boeuf bourguignon" and I had "pan fried fish (red mullet perhaps)". The dishes were beautifully presented and my fish was done perfectly. The portions were very generous.

ツレアイは「牛肉の赤ワイン煮」を、わたしは「魚（多分、ヒメジ）のソテー」をいただきました。

美しく盛り付けられたお料理、美味しゅうございました。魚の焼き加減もバッチリ。

そして、とってもボリューミィ。日本人女子だったら3人でシェアできそうな量でした（笑）
