I saw Still Alice the other day. The main actress Julianne Moore won the Oscar with her role as Alice in this film.
50-year-old Alice enjoyed her successful life with her career, her loving husband and three grown up children until she was diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease which devastated her and her family. The film depicts the cruelties of this disease in a subtle way. You loose your memories, you can't do things you were able to yesterday, you don't know how long you can keep your dignity, and above all, you're loosing yourself...The film made me think of what composes myself. The film also depicts the struggle of her family. Because the subject is everybody's immediate matter, I kept asking myself "what would I do?" and felt a bit depressed and the ending which suggested some hope made me feel better.
On the 10th of March, one of the directors Richard Glatzer passed away. He himself lived with incurable disease ALS. R.I.P.

アリスは50歳。言語学者としてバリバリ働きつつ、よき夫と成人した3人の子供たちに囲まれて、まさに人生順風満帆。そんなアリスが若年性アルツハイマー病と診断されて、彼女と家族の苦悩と葛藤に満ちた生活が始まります。
映画ではこの病の残酷さが抑制されたトーンで描かれていました。
じわじわと失われる記憶。
昨日できたことが今日できない。
いつまで人としての尊厳を保っていられるのか。
そして何よりも自分が自分でなくなってしまう、という恐怖。
改めて、自分という人間を形作っているのは何なのかを考えさせられます。
また、彼女を支える家族の心の揺れも丁寧に描かれていたと思います。
身近なテーマなだけに、自分ならどうする？と問いかけながら観ていたら何だか重たい気分に。
その分、希望のあるラストに救われました。
今月10日、この映画の監督の1人、リチャード・グラッツァー氏が亡くなったそうです。
ALS という難病と共に生きていたグラッツァー氏の思いが、この映画には込められているのでしょうね。
