Polesden Lacey | 花園堪能

On beautiful sunny Sunday about two weeks ago, my husband and I went to Polesden Lacey. In this house, the hostess Mrs. Greville entertained royal family members and politicians in Edwardian era. Can you see that the hedges cover some windows? They are the windows of the kitchen and other rooms where the servants were working. Mrs. Greville did this because she didn't like her servants gossiping about her guests (in fact she herself was really gossipy according to the National Trust Web site :-D).

   

2週間ほど前のよく晴れた日曜日、ツレアイと一緒に Polesden Lacey に行ってきました。

ここは20世紀初頭、女主人だった Greville 夫人が王室メンバーをはじめとするセレブをもてなした邸宅です。

建物の左右1階部分の窓が生垣で覆われているのが、おわかりでしょうか？

これ、覆われている部分はキッチンなどで、邸宅を訪れる客人について使用人が噂話をするのを嫌った Greville 夫人がこんな風にしちゃったそうで（ナショナル・トラストのサイトによると、夫人ご本人も相当なうわさ好きだったとか・笑）。

We were there for a classic car event (my husband is a classic car fanatic). But my interests were more in the gardens. So after having picnic together, I left him with the cars and went off to the gardens.

この日ここを訪れたのは、ツレアイが愛して止まないクラシックカーのイベントがあったから。

とはいえ、わたしのお目当ては広大な庭。

一緒にお弁当を食べた後、車に夢中なツレアイを置いて（笑）、庭の散策へと出かけました。

見頃は過ぎていたものの、うっとりする 美しさ。

There is a pet cemetery in a corner of the property. You can see they were much loved.
敷地内の片隅に歴代ペットの墓地が。ちゃんと墓碑銘も。

It was pity that I was so busy to enjoy gardens that I didn't have much time inside the house.

I would love to come back in June next year to see the rose garden at its best!

惜しむらくは庭を見るのに忙し過ぎて、邸宅内をじっくり見られなかったこと。

来年6月あたり、見頃のローズ・ガーデンを見にまた戻ってきたい！

Our first harvest | 初めての収穫

Since middle of June, we've been harvesting in our garden. Raspberries are becoming raspberry coloured and ready to pick. I pick them everyday.

6月半ば頃から、ぼちぼち庭での収穫作業が始まりました。
まずラズベリーの実が色づき始めまして、毎日せっせと摘んでおります。

I stored raspberries in the freezer and made two jars of jam. Well, I cooked it too long and it is a bit too solid.
  
冷凍庫に貯めておいて、ある程度の量になったらジャムに。ジャムジャー2つ分できました。
少々煮詰め過ぎて硬い仕上がりに。。。（後ろの瓶、ジャムが浮いてるのがおわかりでしょうか。トホホ）

Broad beans did really well! We enjoyed young ones and  matured ones. Slugs enjoyed one third of them though. Oh thou slugs, despite the plenty of weeds to eat in the garden, why do you come to the vegetable patch?

ソラマメ、豊作でした！
薄皮を剥かずに食べられる若いのから、しっかり完熟させたのまで堪能いたしました。
1/3くらい、ナメクジに食べられましたが。 ナメクジよ、庭には雑草がたっぷり生えているというのに何故わざわざ畑の作物を食べるのか！

Red currants, like small gems. We didn't get much, just a handful. I made res currant sauce and it went well with vanilla ice cream. 

まるで小さな宝石のようなフサスグリの実。

残念ながら、 ひとつかみほどしか収穫できず。。砂糖と一緒に煮てバニラアイスにかけて食べました。

Chartwell | チャーチル元首相が暮らした邸宅へ

The most loved and respected British prime minister in history is definitely Sir Winston Churchill, isn't he? During the Second World War, he led Britain with his powerful leadership to victory. My husband and I went to the Chartwell, a family home for him from 1924 to the end of his life.

The rooms remained as they were when he lived there, his cigar on the ashtray, the paintings by him on the walls... By the way, his another hobby was brick laying which I find very British :-)

There were some of his military uniforms and ceremonial costumes. He really was a big man!

歴代首相の中で英国人に最も敬愛されているのは、間違いなくウィンストン・チャーチルでしょう。

第二次大戦中、強力なリーダーシップで英国を勝利に導いたチャーチル元首相。
そんなチャーチルが1924年から亡くなるまでを家族と一緒に過ごした邸宅「Chartwell」に行ってきました。

邸内はほぼ当時のまま保存されているそうで、灰皿に愛用の葉巻が乗ってたり、壁に氏が描いた油絵がかかっていたり。ちなみに、彼の趣味は油絵の他にレンガ積み、だったそうで（なんとも英国的・笑）。

チャーチルが着用した軍服やら礼服なんかも展示されていて、ほんとに大柄な人だったんだなぁ、と。

Although the rose garden had passed its best, it was full of lovely fragrant. This garden was built by Winston Churchill as a token of his love for Lady Churchill. How romantic! His tough appearance makes this even more touching...

ローズ・ガーデン。
見頃は過ぎてましたが、辺り一面よい香り。
この庭はチャーチル氏が奥様への愛の証として造ったそうな。
強面な彼にそんなロマンチックな一面があったとは！より一層キュンと来ますねぇ。

The well looked after gardens here are full of inspiration. The photos above are of the kitchen garden. Beautifully trained raspberries. I should bring this approach to our rather jungle looking raspberry patch...

よく手入れされた庭はすっごく参考になります。
上の写真はキッチン・ガーデン。
誘引されて整然と並ぶラズベリー。我が家のジャングル状態のラズベリー畑に早速取り入れよう。。
